From Stitches to Stories: The Journey of Babs Rudlin
Weaving New Worlds
I’m Babs Rudlin, a British author based in Essex, and I’ve traded my needle for a narrative.
My transition from textile design to fantasy writing wasn’t as much of a leap as it might seem. Whether I’m drafting a pattern or plotting a novel, the core remains the same: it’s about the architecture of the small things. I find the most magic not in the grand explosions, but in the domestic settings where mythical creatures might be found hiding in the pantry, or in the way a morally grey lead grapples with a choice over a quiet cup of tea.
I write for the readers who crave depth without the “spice.” My stories are character-driven, focusing on heavy emotional stakes, complex political landscapes, and the darker, more visceral side of human (and non-human) nature.
For years, my world was defined by the tangible. I understood the weight of a woollen thread, the precision of a quilt square, and the quiet satisfaction of creating something beautiful from nothing. But as any maker knows, when you spend enough time in the details, those details start to take on a life of their own.
